Schenectady County Community College Receives State Approval for START-UP NY Campus Plan
Schenectady County Community College (SCCC) announced today that it has received State approval for the College’s START-UP NY Campus Plan, part of Governor Cuomo’s new job creation program. The plan was approved by Empire State Development (ESD), in consultation with the State University of New York (SUNY).
Denise Murphy-McGraw, Chairwoman of the SCCC Board of Trustees said, “START-UP NY at SCCC will help provide yet another opportunity for the college to contribute to economic development in Schenectady County while providing our students with internships, co-ops and job placements with the partnering businesses.”
The START-UP NY program provides tax-free status to businesses that invest in Schenectady and provide job opportunities in conjunction with SCCC. State approval for the SCCC plan allows the College to start submitting applications to ESD for the new incentive program featuring businesses that plan to link with SCCC to bring new jobs to the community.
The SCCC plan establishes Tax-Free Areas at the College-owned Kindl Building at 201 State Street and at the NYBizLab located at 251 State Street. Both buildings are located in downtown Schenectady close to the community college. The NYBizLab is a business accelerator designed to help tech companies grow. The focus areas include education technology, logistics, software development and apps.
SCCC will be looking to attract businesses that align with its technology focused programs in the areas of Nanoscale Materials Technology, Alternative Energy Technology, Storage Battery Technology, Public Safety, Supply Chain Management, Computer Networking Systems and Cyber Security.
“START-UP NY provides a new opportunity for SCCC to forge partnerships with growing businesses looking to partner with the College’s excellent faculty and leverage the educational assets of the College to secure future growth,” said Dr. Martha Asselin, Acting President of SCCC.
SCCC’s Workforce Development Division will offer non-credit professional development training to sponsored businesses to provide them with the resources to ensure they continue to grow and create jobs for SCCC students and other area residents.
