Schenectady County Legislature Approves $4.8 million Runway Project at Schenectady County Airport

(Schenectady County, NY)  The Schenectady County Legislature approved a $4.8 million project to resurface the main runway and design taxiway improvements at the Schenectady County Airport during their September 12th regular meeting.  The runway is 7,000 feet long and serves both the 109th Airlift Wing at the Stratton Air National Guard Base as well as commercial aviation.

“We are pleased to announce these upgrades to the Schenectady County Airport, a major asset in the region that is home to the 109th airlift wing along with global and regional businesses,” said Rory Fluman, Chair of the County Legislature’s Committee on Intergovernmental Cooperation.  “These runway and taxiway projects are great examples of all levels of government working together to improve our airport and continue the momentum we’ve created within the Airport Business Park.”

The cost of the runway project will be split as follows:

  • Schenectady County            $   172,500
  • New York State                     $   172,500
  • FAA                                         $3,105,000
  • Department of Defense       $1,350,000

The County Legislature also approved $192,000 to design improvements to Taxiway C at the Airport. The taxiway is 2,200 feet long and connects the Air Base with the main runway. The taxiway design cost is split as follows:

  • FAA                                        $172,800
  • New York State                    $    9,600
  • Schenectady County           $    9,600

“The County thanks the Department of Defense, New York State and the Federal Aviation Administration for helping to fund this major upgrade at the County Airport,” said Anthony Jasenski, Chairman of the Schenectady County Legislature.  “We also appreciate the ongoing support of Senators Schumer and Gillibrand and Congressman Tonko for working with us to secure FAA funding first to design and then build out the runway improvements.”

The runway and taxiway projects will go out to bid this winter with work scheduled for 2018.

The County’s Airport Business Park is home to DSM, a global leader in nutritional products; a  Regional Armed Forces Reserve Training Center; Richmor Aviation; REVA, the largest aero-medical transport company in North America and Schenectady Community College’s  flight training and air traffic controller training program.  The Airport also hosts the Stratton Air National Guard base equipped with C-130 aircraft that provide airlift capacity to Polar Regions.
