Key Building on Lower Union Street Gets Facade Upgrade with Help from Metroplex

The Schenectady County Metroplex Development Authority today announced that 600-604 Union Street in downtown Schenectady will get a new and improved look due this spring with help from the downtown Façade program.

The building occupies a key space at the corner of Union and Clinton Streets. The four-story building houses the Whitney Book Corner and Charles Opticians on the first floor with apartments above.

Metroplex has partnered with the owner of 600-604 Union Street to power wash and repaint the exterior of the mixed-use building. Work is now underway. The painted cornice, trim and bay window areas of the building will be repainted the same shade of yellow, which is an approved color for the Union Street Historic District. The fire escapes will also be cleaned and painted.
The building is owned by the Juracka family, which also owns and operates Charles Opticians. The eyeglass business has been family run since 1950.

The Whitney Book Corner has operated at the building for more than 12 years selling books, audio books, DVDs and other items. All proceeds benefit the Schenectady County library system.

Lower Union Street is home to new upscale apartments, restaurants and retail stores. The area is enjoying a strong revival and the project at 600-604 Union Street will add to the momentum building in this part of downtown which is located just a few blocks from Proctors, the Stockade, Union College and other downtown destinations.

Metroplex is providing a $15,000 façade grant to support the exterior work now underway.

Ray Gillen, Metroplex Chair said, “This is a key building on a key corner. Improving the look of building is important to continuing the strong momentum on lower Union Street.”
